This is a compilation of pieces developed for the Signal to Noise Loops Project. It is a series of Human-Machine Collaborations made possible through bespoke cybernetic musical systems that unite human performance and composition with techniques and technologies from artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the internet of things.

The album art incorporates an illustration from Athanasius Kircher's 1650 work, MVSVRGIA VUNIVERSALIS sive ARS MAGNA CONSONI ET DISSONI. The illustration shows the automated hydraulic organ at Palazzo del Quirinale in Rome. The organ was built in 1598 and has been restored and expanded multiple times since then. It is still in operation today.

The wider project explores a cybernetic approach to the use of the internet of things, machine learning & artificial intelligence in the design of generative music systems that allows human and machine musicians to collaborate as equals. It’s roughly an hour of music and spans from dark ambient and industrial glitch to soothing soundscape and intricately detailed clockwork acoustics.

61years explore the concept of musical expression and creativity in programmable machines.
Faint First Noise is an excerpt from the first-ever composition made for the project.
Soma is an investigation into the surfacing of dynamic an organic sounding timbal and textural transformations from highly determinate harmonic structures.

Dublin City Noise Loops and Signal to Noise Loops i++ were created with early iterations of the generative music system at the heart of this project.
This system, informed by principles from the fields of IoT, Sonification, Generative Music, AI/ML and Cybernetics, is designed for composition and live performance.
It uses IoT data from a series of sensors around Dublin to generate music and control the parameters of musical performances. The system reads traffic flow, noise levels, pollution levels, and weather and these in turn determine the musical choices it makes while improvising alongside a human performer or composer.

Two of the 4 new tracks Breathing Space and A Quiet Year were created with an updated version of the system that incorporated machine learning techniques for music generation. These 2 new pieces are audiovisual works that have been installed or performed for several international festivals or concerts listed below.

Whispering Signals was composed using machine learning techniques similar to those employed on 30 Epoch Opus.

Loopscapes of Signal and Noise is the final track composed for the project and returns to an exploration of signal and noise at the timbral and textural levels with musical materials produced using generative AI techniques.

Missing from this collection are Signal to Noise Loops i2+, and Signal to Noise Loops 3++.
These were performed live in Dublin for the Computer Simulated Musical Creativity Conference and in Derry for the ISSTA Festival in 2018. No recordings exist of these performances.

Merci Déhà for the download code. Lots of bands use these ingredients – pretty female vocals over doomy guitars always sounds good, but usually that's where the ideas run out. That isn't the case here. Each song is packed with ideas and evolutions, genres and references it's boring to list but not at all to listen to. A pleasure to have been introduced to this. Luke
