about

61years is a brief reflection on changing musical technologies. The piece opens on the percussive chimes and tiny winding and clicking sounds of a music box, an automatic musical instrument popular in the early 19th century. This material is arranged into traditional harmonic structures with the chimes providing melody and harmony while the tiny sounds that are generated by the mechanism of the box provide rhythmic punctuation.
As the piece progresses, it morphs into a noisy and cavernous drone while the repeated melodic/harmonic patterns become cyclical transformations within this emerging texture. This is achieved with convolutional reverbs and distortion techniques that can only be realized through modern digital technologies. The piece ends with a dissolution of this dronescape to reveal some of the tiny sounds inherent in the use of electronic and digital technologies, drawing parallels to the initial point of departure for the piece: the music box.
