Leviathan

from Leviathan by Stephen Roddy

/

about

The fifth and final piece here serves as both an ode to, and lament for, Leviathan as the hypothetical anima mundi that once encircled and held together a world that now seems caught in an inescapable downward spiral, in which we edge ever closer to ecological cataclysm and human tragedies abounds. Leviathan is imagined in this final tableau in its guise as a sea monster or dragon of the deep. Albeit one close to breaking under an intolerable burden.
We encounter the Leviathan drifting haphazardly on tumultuous ocean waves, calmly resigned to their fate as they are carried ever closer to the ferocious storm clouds that gather on the horizon. In the end, Leviathan fades into the tempest and the seas fall silent.
