The Shining of Karakum

from Leviathan by Stephen Roddy

/

about

The Darvaza gas crater, officially known as the Shining of Karakum, is an actively burning field of natural gas that has collapsed into a 30-meter-deep cavern outside of the village of Darvaza in the Karakum Desert, Turkmenistan. Alternately referred to as the "Gates of Hell" the crater is continually ablaze with the flames of hundreds of natural gas fires. It is thought to have formed in the early 1970s when a Soviet drilling expedition caused a collapse over the gas field and chose to set the crater alight in an effort to prevent the poisonous fumes from escaping. The crater has been burning like a warning beacon ever since, standing as a clear example of the perils and dangers involved in the overexploitation of our natural world.
